The Great Taste Trail
The Nelson-Tasman Great Taste Trail is one of 19 trails that make up the New Zealand Cycle Trail. It is a scenic 174km ride, that takes you through the Abel Tasman National Park, cafes and vineyards. It starts at Nelson Airport, where there is stunning coastal views over Tasman Bay, Waimea Estuary and the Western Ranges, including Mt Arthur, Mt Owen and the Crusader.
You pass over boardwalks along the edge of the Waimea Estuary, where birds are plentiful, including the white heron. The trail then crosses to Rabbit Island, where you can catch the Mapua Ferry with your bikes on board and take a trip to Mapua Wharf. The cycle route then continues north-west from Mapua to Motueka, known for it's award winning wineries and then to Kaiteriteri, the gateway to the Abel Tasman National Park. This easy cycling trail takes a leisurely tour of Tasman's most beautiful coastal and inland areas. Riders will pass vineyards, breweries, orchards and no end of places to stop and enjoy some quality cuisine. Once complete (2020) the loop trail will be 174km long, but it can easily be broken down into bite sized portions just right for short morning rides and gentle afternoon cruises.
